Reviews

'David Bartram has brought together a diverse range of influential voices to offer excellent advice to colleagues working at any level in schools. David is sadly right when he says that there are significant problems in the SEND system at the minute, but this book makes a strong contribution to highlighting the issues and, crucially, pointing the way to make things better. The children at the heart of this book deserve the best, and David's book will help us all to achieve that worthwhile aim.' -- Jarlath O'Brien, Director for Schools, The Eden Academy, author of 'Don't Send Him In Tomorrow'

'The strength of this book can be found in the diversity and thoughtfulness of its perspectives, coupled with the recognition that the education of children with SEND is a collective responsibility best served by the inclusion of the voices and expertise of children and young people and their families. If you want to improve the way in which children with SEND are educated, and you should, then this accessible and practical book is a necessary addition to your library.'- Simon Knight, Special School Leader and National SEND Leader at Whole School SEND

'Great Expectations is essential reading for all teachers. Each contributor has huge experience of improving outcomes for students, and they are able to cut through complex areas with common-sense, real-life advice. When a school improves its SEN provision all students and teachers benefit, irrespective of background or ability. This book should be mandatory reading for everyone involved in schools.’ -- Dr David James, Deputy Head (Academic), editor of ‘World Class: tackling the ten biggest challenges facing schools today’.

'As the book makes clear, setting high expectations for children with SEND and enabling them to achieve is everyone's responsibility. This engaging and practical book isn't just for those working directly with pupils with SEND; everyone from classroom practitioners to school leaders and governors to policy-makers will learn from the evidence and successful approaches described.' — Dr Kate Chhatwal, Chief Executive, Challenge Partners

'For many leaders in education, David Bartram is the go-to expert in SEND. Why? Perhaps most importantly because he keeps it simple and makes excellence seem attainable.  In this edited collection, he pulls off this trick again – each chapter is a concise, meaningful and useful contribution from a highly respected practitioner.  Easily read from cover to cover, or in highly digestible chunks, this is an invaluable resource for school leaders looking to provide well for all young people.' -- Jon Coles, group chief executive, United Learning

‘A very accessible, practical book to support all mainstream classroom practitioners in meeting the needs of children with SEND. David draws on numerous examples from the classroom to demystify the world of SEND and illustrate that best practice in this field is entirely achievable for the whole school community. The importance of evidence-rich, evaluative practice coupled with strong, inclusive leadership at all levels underpins schools’ reflections in each chapter. The significance of an inclusive culture and how that is established is clear, making this a very worthwhile read for both classroom practitioners and school leaders.’ — Karen Nye , School Improvement Manager (Inclusion), Hampshire County Council
