About the authors

James Hollinsley is the head teacher of a two form primary academy that has received both regional and national awards for mental health and wellbeing. He is a qualified SENCO and holds an MA in Specific Learning Difficulties and Special Educational Needs. He was previously Lead Professional for SEND in a London borough, Ofsted inspector for six years and is also a governor for two schools. James is currently a LLE (Local Leader of Education). James has 20 years’ experience in teaching and leadership in both mainstream primary and special secondary sectors. His recent book ‘An Educator’s Guide to Mental Health and Wellbeing in Schools’ (John Catt Publications) explores such issues including staff wellbeing and attachment theories. Longwood Primary Academy, awarded ‘Outstanding Contribution to Emotional Health and Wellbeing’ for two consecutive years by Healthy Schools, was one of the first schools in the country to receive gold status for mental health and is TES 2018 Employer of the Year. In November 2019, Longwood was announced winner of the Happiest Primary School in the National Happiness Awards with Laughology. Formally in Special Measures, it was graded as good with outstanding leadership and management, along with Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare, in less than three years of opening.

Hannah is a Deputy Head Teacher at NET. She leads on ITT (Initial Teacher Training) at NET and is Head of WHAM! Outreach for Schools. Hannah has extensive experience in teacher development and delivering courses on mental health and wellbeing in schools. She is trained to attachment awareness and mental health in the workplace. Hannah is a qualified SENCO and part of a successful leadership team, removing a school from special measures to good.
